ALEXANDER HAMILTON

The Alexander Hamilton Bridge Rehabilitation project in New York City won the 2014 Construction Achievement Project of the Year Award from the Metropolitan Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). With the price tag of $407 million it is the largest single-contract construction completed to date for the New York State Department of Transportation.

Located a half-mile east of the George Washington Bridge, the Alexander Hamilton Bridge is a vital transportation link in New York City, carrying traffic on Interstate 95 between the Trans-Manhattan Expressway in Washington Heights and the Cross-Bronx Expressway in the Bronx. More than 188,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily, yet prior to the rehabilitation, it had not undergone major repairs since opening in 1963.

The rehabilitation of the 2,375-foot bridge involved complete deck replacement, widening to provide standard shoulders, modifications to existing substructure units, retrofit of steel superstructure framing, and painting. The project also reconstructed the circular approach ramps of the associated Highbridge Interchange and replaced several nearby roadway bridges. All eight lanes of cross-river traffic remained open throughout construction.
